From May 14th to June 11th, 2021, the overseas high-quality courses of the International Demonstration Base of the School of Philosophy and Sociology, Jilin University, with the theme of The Moral Philosophy of Immanuel Kant, were successfully held online. Oxford University lecturer Amna Whiston was invited by the School of Philosophy and Social Sciences of Jilin University to open a five-day course for our students.
On May 14, Amna mainly introduced the concept of goodwill and its place in Kant's moral philosophy. Kant's deontological approach to moral issues is based on Kant's understanding that we humans have freedom as rational subjects.
On May 21, Amna discussed Kant's good and right. Kant's deontological approach to moral issues has put rights above the good priority. Under the critical perspective of the primacy of good (consequentialism) principle, Kant established the highest principle of morality by placing rights above the priority of interest.
On May 28, Amna explored the issue of whether Kant’s prioritization of rights is compatible with his deontological rationalism through the elaboration of Kant’s moral motives.
On June 4, Amna discussed the objectivity and rationality of morality. Kant’s rationalist philosophical approach to moral questions defends the claim that the supreme principle of rationality (Categorical Imperative) is a standard of rationality.
On June 11, Amna discussed Kant's Categorical Imperative. Kant defends the claim that the Categorical Imperative is an objective and rationally necessary principle of morality that we must always follow regardless of any natural inclinations we may have.
